University Times

The following is a summary of construction completed this summer at Pitt and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) as well as ongoing projects.

Information was provided by the Office of Facilities Management and UPMC's Department of Architecture and Engineering Services.

* Bradford Campus Dormitory and Service Building

Construction of two dormitories, F. Scott Fitzgerald House and Willa Cather House, was completed in early August.

Each dorm contains 48 beds and 14,000 square feet of space. Construction of the campus laundry and campus police office building also have been completed ($3.46 million).

* Cathedral of Learning

As part of a five-year, $5 million Oakland campus classroom renovation project, Pitt this summer spent $831,000 to improve classrooms on the Cathedral's second and third floors.

* Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering

A $200,000 Cell Culture Laboratory and a $944,000 animal facility have been completed. Work is continuing on labs and other unfinished areas ($1.8 million).

* Fitzgerald Field House

The basketball floor has been refinished. A renovation of the basketball team room included new lockers, lighting, carpet and raised ceilings. Weight room renovations included new ceiling fans and mirrors (total cost: $150,000).

* Graduate School of Public Health

Sixth-floor laboratories have been renovated to allow for relocation of the Department of Human Genetics from the Biomedical Science Tower ($578,000). Also, deteriorating masonry throughout the building is being replaced ($250,000).

* Greensburg Campus Library Administration Building

Construction is half-completed on a 52,000 square foot building to include a library and administrative offices. Completion of the $6.2 million project is scheduled for early January.

* Greensburg Campus Powers Hall

A $1 million project to renovate and construct classrooms, offices and an auditorum addition is scheduled for completion in July 1995.

* Greensburg Campus Smith Hall

Additions and alterations to the existing building will include a new roof, theatre addition, security information building addition and a fire alarm upgrade ($1.8 million).

* Holland Hall/Book Center

Electrical renovations and a new fire alarm system for The Book Center and the 11th floor of Holland Hall have been completed ($1.5 million).

* Iroquois Building

Concrete is being poured for the foundation of a 572-car underground parking garage. Construction of the steel structure for the office tower to be built above the garage will begin as soon as the garage is finished. Completion of the entire $55 million project is scheduled for early 1996.

* Johnstown Campus Athletic Building and Field Installation

This $1.1 million project included construction of a new athletic building, installation of a new intramural softball field and installation of a track and lighting around the existing football field.

* Johnstown Campus Living and Learning Center

This $18.1 million project included construction of a three-story residence hall for 400 students and a separate two-story conference center connected to the dorm by an enclosed bridge ($18.12 million).

* Medical Research Facility

The Commonwealth is nearing completion of the shell of this 200,000 square foot science facility on the roof of the Presbyterian University Hospital garage adjacent to the Biomedical Science Tower. The two science buildings will be connected on several floors. Interior work on the Medical Research Facility has been delegated to UPMC. Completion of the $23 million facility is scheduled for late 1995.

* Nuclear Physics Laboratory

This $2.15 million project involves demolition of a small portion of Old Engineering Hall, removal of a bridge between Allen Hall and the Van de Graaff Building, construction of a 5,600 square foot building connecting Allen with Old Engineering, and renovation of the third floor of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory.

* Pittsburgh Campus Entrance Accessibility Project

Ramps, handrails, signage and automatic door operators are being added to make entrances more accessible to handicapped persons at The Book Center, Bruce Hall, Cathedral of Learning, Frick Fine Arts Building, Fitzgerald Field House, Hillman Library, Log Cabin, Music Building, Thackeray Hall, Trees Hall and William Pitt Union ($431,000).

* Outdoor Lighting Phase II

Security lighting is being installed along Forbes and Bellefield avenues around the Cathedral of Learning and at Stephen Foster Memorial, Thackeray Hall, William Pitt Union, Bouquet Street, Pennsylvania Hall, University Drive and the Mineral Industries Building ($202,800). The project is 90 percent complete.

* Sidewalk Repairs

As part of an ongoing project, sidewalks in front of the Cathedral of Learning and Hillman Library have been repaired. Repair work continues at Pitt Stadium, the Chemistry Building and the William Pitt Union.

* Trees Hall

Locker Rooms Upgrading of swimming locker rooms and team rooms is set for completion by Sept. 15 ($115,000).

* University Child Development Center

Renovations, including asbestos and lead abatement, are being done to the 635 Clyde Street building to accommodate the center, which is currently located in Bellefield Hall (Total cost: $2 million). The work is set to be finished in April.
