Some funding available for demonstration projects

The Instructional Technology Working Group of the Executive Committee on Academic Computing has capital funding available on a competitive basis for a limited number of demonstration projects during this fiscal year.

Individual faculty, groups of faculty or entire academic units may submit projects for consideration under the program.

According to Lewis Jacobson, chairperson of the Instructional and Technology Group, the intent of the program is to promote the development and/or implementation of advanced instructional technologies using computers, network communications, video or other new methods.

The most important criteria is selecting proposals will be innovation in hardware and/or software and/or instruction, the breadth and depth of potential impact on teaching and learning, and the potential as a model for other programs.

Proposals to simply expand the use of technologies already in use at the University will not be considered for funding, according to Jacobson.

Interested faculty should submit a pre-proposal, not to exceed two pages, by Nov. 15. No full proposal will be considered without prior approval by the Instructional and Technology Group of a pre-proposal.

The pre-proposal should include the names, campus addresses and affiliations of all proposing faculty, a brief explanation of the learning objectives of the program being proposed, the proposed technology application, an estimate of the capital budget required, a brief description of resources beyond technology that may be required, and an indication of what arrangements might be made to share resources with other faculty or units and how proposed instructional technology might be applied to other instructional tasks.

Pre-proposals will be reviewed by the Instructional and Technology Group and a subgroup will be selected by the end of the fall term for development of a full proposal. Selection for development of a full proposal, however, does not guarantee funding, according to Jacobson.

It is anticipated that full proposals will be developed in close consultation with the Instructional and Technology Group and submitted in final form by Feb. 15, 1995.

Interested faculty should consult with the Instructional and Technology Group before preparing a pre-proposal.
