Public Safety advisory group begins to meet

A newly formed committee of faculty, staff and students will advise the campus police and try to improve the University community's awareness of safety and security issues.

"Hopefully, with this cross-section of people throughout the University we can identify areas of concern for public safety on this campus and work with the new director of Public Safety [Rick Boyd] in trying to answer these concerns," said committee chairperson John DeVitto, associate vice chancellor for Business.

DeVitto said he formed the committee at the recommendation of the Public Safety director search committee.

The advisory committee held an organizational meeting in December and plans to meet again this month, DeVitto said.

Campus police frequently hear from a limited number of campus groups and individuals, but the new advisory committee will provide feedback from a wider representation of the University community, DeVitto said.

Members of the committee are: DeVitto; Heath Golden, Student Government Board; Bob Harkins, Parking and Transportation; Dick Howe, Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Maria Novey, Athletics; Joanne Rosol, Staff Association Council; Mary Ruiz, sexual assault coordinator; Shabua Sabur, Graduate and Professional Student Association; Stephanie Sudzina, Campus Women's Organization; Rinaldo Washington, Black Action Society; John Wilds, Community Relations, and Jo Ann Woodson, Residence Life. Public Safety Director Boyd serves as an ex-officio committee member.
