Medical center has own severe weather policy

According to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC) severe weather policy, a severe weather condition is one that causes extreme difficulty in commuting to and from UPMC.

The policy places responsibility on UPMC administrators who are on call to declare a severe weather condition. Severe weather conditions will be announced by AUDIX, the University's telephone message system, to all management council members within UPMC.

All staff designated as "essential" are to report to work as scheduled during severe weather conditions. Positions considered essential have been identified by the management operations committee and executive staff. UPMC staff who do not know the status of their position should ask their supervisors.

Administrators on call at the start of each shift will determine if the severe weather status should continue for their shift. When administrators determine that the severe weather condition has ended, an AUDIX announcement will be made to members of the management council.

Essential staff who fail to report for work during severe weather conditions will not be paid for the time they miss. Essential staff may use only vacation time or personal time that has been pre-scheduled before a severe weather condition is announced. Essential staff must provide a physician's note to use sick time during a severe weather condition.

Staff who are not considered essential still should try to come to work. If nonessential staff cannot make it into work, managers may approve the use of personal time or vacation time so those employees may be paid.

Managers also may permit staff to miss work and make up the time they miss within the same period. Questions on the policy should be directed to a UPMC human resources specialist.
