Pitt to hire vice provost for Women's Concerns

Pitt will hire a new administrator, the vice provost for Women's Concerns, to oversee University programs that encourage the recruitment, retention and career development of women faculty, staff and students.

The job is open only to Pitt tenured faculty members, including men, said search committee chairperson Jack L. Daniel. March 1 is the deadline for applications. The goal is to hire the new vice provost by May 1, said Daniel, who is vice provost for Academic Affairs.

Salary is dependent upon the candidate's experience and qualifications, Daniel said. Applicants should send their CVs to Daniel at 801 Cathedral of Learning.

(See job listings on page 11 for a full description of the new vice provost's duties.) Proposals to hire a senior administrator to promote women's interests date back to the provostship of Donald Henderson in the early 1990s, Daniel said.

The addition of a vice provost for Women's Concerns will raise the number of Pitt vice provosts to five.

Members of the vice provost search committee include Daniel (chairperson); Ellen Frank, professor, psychiatry; Irene Frieze, professor, psychology; Wynne Korr, associate professor and director of doctoral programs, School of Social Work; Audrey Murrell, associate professor, Katz Graduate School of Business; Sindee Simon, assistant professor, chemical engineering; and Peter Shane, dean, School of Law. Joan Slezak of the Provost's office is staffing the committee.
