Pitt has established the Robert R. Lavelle scholarship for outstanding African-American students who want to pursue careers in business through the College of Business Administration. The scholarship covers tuition, room and board, and is renewable annually for four years based on academic performance.

A 1951 alumnus of Pitt, Lavelle is president of Lavelle Real Estate, Inc., and executive vice president of Dwelling House Savings and Loan Association. He also is member of the Board of Visitors of the Katz Graduate School of Business, a life member of the Salvation Army and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

According to Vice Provost Jack Daniel, the scholarship is part of the Pitt's continuing effort to attract academically high achieving African-American students. n Daniel said the scholarship was named for Lavelle because of his entrepreneurial spirit and his deep and abiding commitment to public service.

"Mr. Lavelle's outlook on public service is in keeping with the University's interest in helping students learn through public service initiatives," Daniel said. "He is an excellent role model to all youth in this regard."
