Health Science search semi-finalists named

Seven semi-finalists, including three internal candidates, have been selected by the search committee charged with filling the position of senior vice chancellor for the Health Sciences.

The seven were culled from a list of more than 130 individuals who applied for or were nominated for the position. Of those 130 individuals, the search committee reviewed written submissions from about 80 who expressed serious interest in the position and interviewed 17 of them last month, according to search committee chairperson Mark Nordenberg.

The semi-finalists will return to campus for extended interviews and to meet with representatives of various Pitt groups in March. Once the second series of interviews is completed, the committee will submit a list of finalists to the chancellor.

"The individual members of this group obviously present different strengths," said Nordenberg. "The committee believes that collectively they are a very strong group. Our list includes individuals who have impressive records as senior level university leaders, as deans, as chairs of important departments and as directors of major centers. It includes individuals who have distinguished academic records of their own and who already enjoy national reputations as academic administrators." The semi-finalists are:

* Edward J. Benz Jr., professor and chair of the Department of Medicine in Pitt's School of Medicine.

* C. McCollister Evarts, senior vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the College of Medicine at Penn State.

* Bernadine P. Healy, senior policy adviser, The Page Center of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and former director of the National Institutes of Health.

* Ronald B. Herberman, professor of oncology at Pitt and director of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

* David Korn, professor, vice president and dean of the School of Medicine at Stanford University.

* Loren Roth, professor of psychiatry and vice president for managed care at Pitt's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

* Tadataka Yamada, professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan.
