Christopher H. Evans, professor of orthopaedic surgery and of molecular genetics and biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), has been named the Henry J. Mankin Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and was honored with a $1.5 million endowed chair.

The professorship and chair are named after Henry J. Mankin, a Pittsburgh native regarded as a pioneer in orthopaedic research and whose work has led to improved treatments for arthritis and other joint diseases. Evans, who came to Pitt in 1978 as a lecturer in the orthopaedic surgery department, is a leading UPMC researcher whose investigations focus on the development of gene therapy for arthritis and other connective tissue diseases.

School of Library and Information Science Dean Toni Carbo Bearman was a U.S. representative to the G-7 Round Table of Business Leaders to the G-7 Information Society Conference last month in Brussels, Belgium. The conference was the first G-7 ministers meeting to specifically discuss telecommunications and information issues.

Bernard Fisher, Distinguished Service Professor of Surgery, received the Third Claude Jacquillat Award for Achievement in Clinical Oncology last month at the International Congress of Anticancer Chemotherapy in Paris. Established in 1991 in memory of Claude Jacquillat, a leader in clinical cancer research, the award honors those who have made outstanding contributions in the treatment of cancer patients.

At the annual convention of the Philological Association of the Pacific Coast, held at the San Francisco State University, Pitt Johnstown campus Associate Professor of English Kamal Verma was elected president of the Asian Literature Section for 1995.

Kathleen McIntyre-Seltman has rejoined the Magee-Womens Hospital's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. She has been appointed medical director of the Transitions Health Center, dedicated to the health care of women 45 and older; director of the Fourth-Year Medical Student Clerkship, and a Pitt associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences. McIntyre-Seltman was formerly an attending physician at Magee, as well as an instructor and later an assistant professor at Pitt.

Richard T. Esch is the new auxiliary services director at Pitt's Bradford campus.

The newly created senior management position reports to the campus's vice president for Business Affairs and is responsible for dining services, special events, camps and conferences, housing and other campus auxiliary services.
