Donald L. Cleland

Donald L. Cleland, 90, professor emeritus of education and former director of the education school's Reading Laboratory (now Reading Center), died Feb. 18, 1995, at Passavant Health Center, Zelienople.

Cleland received his master's of education and Ph.D. degrees from Pitt. He earned his undergraduate degree a Westminster College and later was principal at Etna High School.

During World War II, Cleland served with the U.S. Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of major. He then became a lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Air Force Reserve.

Following his retirement from Pitt in 1974 after 21 years as a professor and Reading Laboratory director, Cleland taught for six years at Ohio University.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Dean Cleland; a sister, Marion Cleland Weller of Portersville; and two brothers, James Blair Cleland of Aliquippa and David Ira Cleland of Harmony, who is the Ernest E. Roth Professor at Pitt°Øs engineering school and a professor of engineering management.
