Two assistant professors in Pitt's School of Engineering, Julie d'Itri and Alice Smith, have received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award.

The CAREER Award replaces both NSF's Presidential Young Investigator/National Young Investigator awards system and Research Initiation programs. It recognizes and funds the work of a small number of aspiring young faculty across the nation.

NSF granted d'Itri $210,000 for 1995-99 for her research project, "Environmentally Benign Chemical Processing: A Theme for the Future of Chemical Engineering." Smith will receive $199,574 for 1995-99 for research on "Resampling Approaches to Neural Model Validation." Three engineering school professors received professional society awards recently.

The American Society for Engineering Education gave Byron S. Gottfried, professor of engineering education, its North Central Section ASEE Campus Representative Award as part of its 1994-95 membership promotion program.

Kim LaSola Needy, assistant professor of industrial engineering, received the 1995 Member of the Year Award from the American Production and Inventory Control Society, Pittsburgh chapter.

Fred Pohland, Weidlein Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, received the 1995 Stanley E. Kappe Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions to increasing public awareness of the environment and the academy's objectives.

The Pennsylvania division of the American Trauma Society has honored Harry Marshall, trauma and general surgery research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, for his efforts in trauma prevention education among African- American youth.

Under Marshall's guidance and leadership, a community-based violence prevention program called M-Powerhouse was established. It combines primary and preventive health services, and educational, counseling and recreational curricula. One of the project's goals is to provide a forum for evaluating and discussing physical, psychological, educational and environmental consequences of violence.

The Bradford campus's new director of Campus Police and Safety is Jeffrey A. Schneider. Schneider formerly was director of Campus Safety and Judicial Affairs at the Titusville campus.

Sean Miller, a Pitt basketball standout from 1987 to 1992 and the University's all-time career assists leader, has returned to Pitt as an assistant basketball coach.

He replaces Tom Crean, who has taken an assistant coaching job at Michigan State.

Mahmoud El Nokali, associate professor of electrical engineering, has been appointed director of Continuing Engineering Education.

Patrick Louglin, assistant professor of electrical engineering, has been appointed as guest editor of a special issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE entitled, "Time-Frequency Analysis: Biomedical, Accoustical and Industrial Applications." The issue, scheduled to be published in summer 1996, will feature papers by leading academic, industrial and governmental researchers in the field.

Neal Ryan, who is an associate professor of psychiatry and director of education and psychiatric informatics at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, has received the 1994 Gerald L. Klerman Young Investigator Award from the Depressive and Manic Depressive Association.

Ryan, the first psychiatrist to receive the Klerman award, was recognized for his contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of depression in children.
