William Grier Willis

William Grier Willis, a Pitt alumnus who was a faculty member in the political science department at the University from 1942 to 1962, died June 2 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, Md. He was 85.

Willis directed Pitt's Institute of Local Government from 1955 until 1962, when he became vice president and secretary of Temple University. Willis retired from Temple in 1974.

He received a master's degree in political science from Pitt and did postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.

Willis is survived by his daughter, Martha Dale; two grandsons, Ian Scott and William Robins Anderson; and a sister, Annabelle Smith.

A memorial service will be held June 24 at 11 a.m. at Heron Point Retirement Community in Chestertown, Md., where Willis resided.
