The Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative (PTEI) has begun a seed grant program to support product-driven research in tissue engineering. The program is made possible by the Ben Franklin Technology Center of Western Pennsylvania.

"We are funding research projects so that they develop to a stage at which outside firms or investors become interested," said Peter Johnson, PTEI director.

PTEI promotes regional economic development by advancing and commercializing University-developed technology. It focuses on biomedical and related technologies associated with engineered tissues. These include cell culture, gene therapy, organ transplantation and regeneration, biomaterials development and computer-assisted analysis and design.

Proposals will be selected for up to $15,000 based on scientific merit and feasibility, product orientation and potential for contributing to economic growth. The deadline for applications is June 30. Applications are available by calling at 624-7943.
