Environmental scientists and auto mechanics.

Police officers and architects.

Project managers, computer system analysts and fleet management personnel.

These are just a few of the careers available in Pitt’s business and operations divisions – and too many people are unaware of this variety, said Lori Carnvale, director of benefits in the Office of Human Resources (OHR). If job hunters think Pitt only hires professors, “they’re forgetting about all of the other jobs it takes to support our students,” she said.

That’s why Pitt will hold a Career Building Expo which focuses on careers in these two divisions on Wednesday, July 26, from noon until 6 p.m. at the William Pitt Union.

In particular, OHR hopes to attract new employees who will increase Pitt’s diversity and inclusion, as part of Chancellor Patrick Gallagher’s strategic plan for the University. Notice of the expo was sent to more than 50 local social-service agencies, neighborhood groups and other organizations whose members may not be aware of the opportunities at Pitt. Pitt students and current Pitt staff members are welcome as well.

“The variety of careers and jobs can be an eye opener” in business and operations, said Jane Volk, director of employee and labor relations in OHR. The career expo also will include information about union jobs at Pitt, which Volk pointed out are year-round positions – unlike many in construction – and include some Pitt benefits.

The event isn’t a job fair, she noted. It aims to make many more individuals aware of careers in business and operations at Pitt, and how they can qualify or train for such posts. Those careers encompass jobs in commercial real estate and property management, facilities management, housing, food service, integrated security, parking and transportation, public safety and environment, health and safety, University stores and human resources itself. Representatives from each of these units will be on hand to talk to attendees and build relationships for future hiring.

The day will also feature workshops on navigating PittSource (the University’s hiring website), with on-site demonstrations, as well as training sessions on résumé writing and interviewing. Michelle Fullem, director of recruiting and client services in OHR, and her team will be there to meet speak in person with participants, as well as benefits office personnel.

Unions also will have representatives at the career expo to discuss their apprenticeship programs, while Pitt affinity group members will be able to speak about the aid they give Pitt employees.

Online registration for the event is preferred but not required at the following website: http://pi.tt/careerbuildingexpo. More information, including workshop times, is available on the Office of Human Resource’s website.
