24-hour stroke consultation service established

Stroke specialists from the UPMC Stroke Institute have initiated a stroke consult service for physicians with direct pager access to a stroke specialist 24 hours a day.

Stroke specialists will be available to discuss acute stroke management, complications following stroke or complicated cases and secondary prevention options.

The consult service will be provided by Lawrence Wechsler, director of the UPMC Stroke Institute, professor of neurology at Pitt’s School of Medicine and vice chair of clinical affairs in the Department of Neurology; Tudor Jovin, assistant professor of neurology and a neurointerventionalist; Maxim Hammer, assistant professor of neurology and cognitive disorders and stroke specialist with the UPMC Stroke Institute, and Ken Uchino, assistant professor of neurology.

The UPMC Stroke Institute consists of doctors with a wide variety of specialties coming together to offer the latest techniques of stroke diagnosis and treatment.

According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and is a primary cause of serious, long-term disability. Approximately 160,000 Americans die every year from stroke.
