Deadline for diversity seminar Feb. 16

Faculty interested in making their courses more inclusive in terms of gender, race and other diversity issues, both in content and pedagogy, can apply for admission to this year's Faculty Seminar for More Inc lusive Courses. The seminar, which will be held May 10-21, is sponsored by the Chancellor's Diversity Working Group.

Applications can be obtained at the Office of the Chancellor, 132 Cathedral of Learning. Completed applications should be sent to Nancy Washington, 132 CL. The deadline for applying is Feb. 16.

This year's seminar, the last in a five-year series, will involve common readings and discussion, as well as library time and presentations by outside visitors and local experts. Stipends of $1,500 will be awarded to each of the 10 faculty participants.

Applicants should include:

* The syllabus of a course they have taught at Pitt that they would like to make more inclusive.

* A completed application form, including a statement of the type of course enhancement they are seeking and information on why changes in the course would have a significant impact. For example, the course could be a large introductory class or be requir ed for majors.

* A curriculum vitae.

* A letter from their department head or dean indicating support for the faculty member's participation.

* A letter from a colleague or student commenting on their teaching or a recent course evaluation.

Selection criteria include the quality of the proposal, the number of students affected by changes in the course, the impact of a course on a program and the degree to which the proposed enhancements make the course address race and gender.

The selection committee also is seeking both tenured and tenure-stream faculty and a range of disciplines. For more information, contact Jean Ferguson Carr (624-6537) or Audrey Murrell (624-1651).
