Pitt tops blood donation efforts

Pitt and UPMC Health System were honored by Central Blood Bank (CBB) for outstanding efforts in collecting blood donations during 1998.

The University collected the largest number of donations — 3,018 — and started a campaign last year to encourage incoming freshmen to donate blood.

The hospitals of UPMC Health System collected 1,689 units, 20 percent more than the previous year and more than any of the area's health care organizations. UPMC ranked sixth on the CBB's list of the 25 outstanding local donor groups.
