Medical ethics center renamed to reflect ties with A&S, law

Pitt's Center for Medical Ethics has been renamed to reflect the closer ties developing between the center and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the School of Law.

Now called the Center for Bioethics and Health Law, the center offers courses in the new master's in bioethics degree program, awarded through Arts and Sciences. The center also administers the health law certificate program, which is the law school's first concentration program.

In addition, center faculty teach courses in joint-degree programs in law and public health, law and bioethics, and medicine and bioethics.

Center director Alan Meisel, who is the Dickie, McCamey and Chilcote professor of bioethics and professor of law and psychiatry, said that the new name reflects the expansion of the center's mission as well as the growing relationship between law and medicine.

"It is an inescapable fact of contemporary American society that ethical issues frequently intersect, particularly in bioethics," Meisel said.

Founded in 1987, the Center for Bioethics and Health Law is composed of faculty from history, law, medicine, nursing, philosophy, psychology and public policy who have made contributions through research, publications and professional service to the field of bioethics and health law.
