Tea Time

A traditional Japanese tea ceremony was performed Sept. 23 at the Pitt Book Center, one a series of Thursday teas the bookstore is offering to expand international exposure to the University community.

The event, which was sponsored by the Book Center and the Asian studies program as part of Pitt’s International Week, featured a traditional tea ceremony performed by Yoko Motoyama, pictured here pouring water for the koicha or “thick tea.” Pictured below, an assistant wipes down the cup before handing it to the next person for drinking.

The ceremony also included a demonstration of the Japanese floral art of Ikenobo.

Future noontime international teas at the Book Center include a Russian tea Oct. 21 and an English tea Dec. 2.
