Parking rates expected to increase

Parking rates expected to increase

Monthly parking fees at Pitt are likely to go up July 1, but not as high as the $14 per month savings in taxes most permit holders began receiving in 1999.

Bob Harkins, director of Parking, Transportation and Services, said he is finalizing details with the University administration, which is expected to confirm the new fees within a week or so.

In January, Parking and Transportation announced an automatic deduction before taxes are calculated for Pitt permit holders using payroll deduction. The pre-tax discount is in compliance with an amendment to the 1999 Internal Revenue Service Code.

According to Parking and Transportation calculations, an individual in the 22.65 percent tax bracket who pays $65 per month for parking is saving about $14 per month. Someone in the 41.05 percent bracket paying $65 monthly is saving approximately $26 per month.

Harkins said the rate increase would not exceed $14 per month. Fees are likely to rise across the board, except for a few parking spaces Pitt leases to outside vendors. Those spaces may go up more, Harkins said.

The Pittsburgh campus overall capacity is about 4,500 spaces.

In other parking news, Harkins said arrangements are underway to accommodate permit holders in the University's D and ST lots (a total of 80 spaces) who will be displaced this fall in preparation for the demolition of Pitt Stadium.
