Carolyn Hampton & David Hampton Sr.

Carolyn Hampton, a long-time employee in Student Financial Services, died at home Dec. 2, 2004, from complications following a ruptured brain aneurysm. Her husband, David, who was employed by Facilities Management, died Nov. 6, 2004 after a long struggle with cancer.

Carolyn Hampton’s 35-year career at the University began in Student Accounts and continued in Student Loans and Special Accounts.  She served took over as director of University Collections in 1998.

She was active in several professional organizations. In 1998 she was appointed to Affiliated Computer System’s Client Advisory Group.  In 2000 she began to serve on the board of directors of the Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations (COHEAO), a national financial aid lobbying organization.  She was co-chair of the COHEAO Perkins task force and a member of the HHS task force as well.

Hampton addressed many professional organizations on the topics of federal mandates and regulatory changes related to the Perkins and health professions loan programs.  She also was a recognized industry expert in higher education collection practices, and was asked to speak on the topic at many regional and national events.

“Carolyn was a key player in our organization,” said Denny DeSantis, associate vice chancellor for Student Financial Services.    “Her leadership and mentoring skills served as an example for others.  We will not only miss her expertise, but her smile and contagious laugh as well.”

COHEAO has established a scholarship in Hampton’s memory to benefit undergraduate students.  Donations to the Carolyn Hampton Memorial Scholarship fund should be sent to COHEAO, c/o Washington Partners, 1101 Vermont Ave. NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC, 20005.

Hampton is survived by her son, David Jr.; her brother, Robert Brown; her sister, Shirley Nettles, and  her sister-in-law  Juanita Verse.
