On tap in Pitt’s Theatre Arts Dept.

Catch the Department of Theatre Arts teaching artists-in-residence in upcoming Pitt Repertory Theatre productions and the Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program:

“Rashomon” features Doug Pona and Doug Mertz, Feb. 16-27, the Charity Randall Theatre at the Stephen Foster Memorial. The play, set before the medieval ruins of the Rashomon Gate, tells the story of a murder and a rape from four points of view, leaving the audience to make up their own minds about what really happened.

“The Boundary” features E. Bruce Hill, April 6-17, Henry Heymann Theatre at the Stephen Foster Memorial. The reality of the first Gulf War is brought painfully home to a dysfunctional family and its troubled patriarch.

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools features Doug Mertz and Kathyrn Spitz in “Hamlet,” which tours western Pennsylvania schools through April. The educational outreach program of Pitt’s Department of Theatre Arts, Shakespeare-in-the-Schools bridges the study of Shakespearean and other classic texts with the artistry of performance through programs that explore the world’s greatest literary works.

“Rachel Carson Saves the Day!” features Elena Passarello in the next Shakespeare-in-the-Schools touring production, which kicks off with a performance in the environmentalist’s hometown at Springdale High School Jan. 27. The cross-disciplinary, multi-media production highlights the history and importance of the environmental movement and how Rachel Carson’s work transformed the way we think about and act upon the earth.

The production comes to Pitt in May.
