Finishing touches

Finishing touches

Japanese master carpenter Isamu Eto attaching the tablet arm to a student chair in the Japanese Nationality Room, one of the last tasks before the room was completed. The 25th edition of the world-famous classrooms, housed in 317 Cathedral of Learning, will be dedicated July 25.

The room's 87 main components were designed and built using traditional Japanese tools in Kyoto, Japan, then dismantled and shipped to Pittsburgh for reassembly by local and Japanese artisans.

Designed by Japanese architect Hirokazu Nagase, the room simulates a traditional minka farmhouse, typical of the nonruling class in Japan.

See pictures on pages 6 and 7.
