Annual Report Reveals Highs and Lows of University Salaries

The Office of Institutional Research recently released its report on the salaries of full-time Pitt employees as of Oct. 31, 2003.

The highest average salaries paid to members of a University responsibility center went to 7 executives, administrators and managers in the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, who earned an average salary of $166,700 and a median salary of $181,966.

At the lower end of the spectrum, 12 secretaries and clerical workers at the Titusville campus earned an average of $17,758, with a median of $16,728.

The Office of Institutional Research reports the salaries and other data to fulfill financial disclosure requirements for state-funded universities in the Commonwealth. The state required the University to report its October 2003 salary figures in December 2004. The salaries report was presented at the Feb. 18 meeting of the University budget policies committee.

The report revealed mean (average) and median (the middle point at which an equal number of employees earn more or less) salaries for all full-time staff and faculty. Employees’ salaries were attributed to the responsibility centers through which their employee records were processed.

The 12-month salaries of faculty were converted into a nine-month equivalent for reporting purposes.

To avoid revealing individuals’ pay, the report did not list salaries for groups with three or fewer employees.

The salaries did not include consultation fees, clinical income from the UPMC Health System and other non-Pitt compensation.

Also excluded from the report were salaries of research associates, part-time employees and faculty on leave of absence without pay.
