UPJ staff group wins community service award

UPJ staff group wins community service award

The Advisory Board at the Johnstown campus will present its third Service-to-Community Award to the UPJ Staff Activities and Concerns (SAC) Association Aug. 4.

The award was established to recognize students, faculty and staff who have contributed to the quality of life in the Johnstown region. The E. Jeanne Gleason Advisory Board Chairman's Prize of $250 accompanies the award.

Among the association's activities is coordinating employee participation during the annual freshman move-in day in late August, shuttling parents from parking lots to dormitories and helping students carry luggage.

Recently, the association coordinated a gift-giving project for the clients of Mom's House. In addition, members sponsored a child's visit to Disney World through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In 1995, the UPJ SAC Association started the Employee Student Partnership project, in which faculty and staff volunteered to help freshmen make a smooth transition to college.

For the past five years, the association has provided volunteers for the Salvation Army's Project Bundle-Up. The staff group recently announced the creation of an annual scholarship for qualified Johnstown campus students. The scholarship, in the form of a book award, will be funded through employee donations and a variety of fund-raising activities.

The UPJ SAC Association was established in 1994 to address employee issues and concerns and as a vehicle for staff to become involved in the community.

Bob Knipple, founding president and current vice president, said, "The staff wanted a way to give back to the community in which we live and work."
