UPMC makes transplants available in Italy

UPMC Health System is joining with the Italian government to make services such as liver transplantation available to the citizens of Sicily and southern Italy. The effort is the largest international public/private partnership ever undertaken by a U.S. academic medical center.

The Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione is a joint venture of UPMC, the Italian government and Civico and Cervella Hospitals of Palermo.

In addition to transplantation and other treatments for liver diseases, ISMETT will expand the kidney transplant service at Civico. Eventually, transplants of other organs will be provided through the institute.
