New Prizes Aim to Spark United Way Participation

New prizes in weekly drawings for those who donate to the United Way — including vacation days and parking spots — have helped to push Pitt’s United Way campaign to 71 percent of its 2017 goal of $713,000. Campaign director Kate McGlynn, manager of administration in the Office of Institutional Advancement, said the weekly prize drawings continue to motivate campaign contributions.

As of Nov. 27, the annual campaign had raised $508,442, reported McGlynn.

The new incentive program of weekly prize drawings was introduced as part of this year’s campaign to encourage earlier giving. The drawings among all of this year’s contributors are held each Friday at noon. Early winners have been very excited, said McGlynn — “especially the vacation day and parking spot recipients.”

Two dozen Pitt employees have won prizes in the drawings so far:

Paid vacation day:
Kathleen Buccigrossi, Division of Student Affairs
LeRoy Divelbiss, Computing Services and Systems Development
Kayla Dunn, Division of Student Affairs

Crystal McCormick Ware, University Library System

The final four prize drawings are set for Dec. 1, 8 and 15, 2017, and Jan. 9, 2018. Employees who make their donations before Fridays at noon are eligible for the drawing that takes place that week and for all subsequent drawings.

Prize incentives will be offered again next year, McGlynn said. “These are great prizes, and the weekly drawing is an extra incentive to encourage colleagues to give early for increased chances to win. They help all of the campaign volunteers across campus add a little excitement to their departmental updates.”

“Many people give year in and year out, regardless of any incentive, simply because helping our neighbors is the right thing to do,” said McGlynn. “Do not underestimate the power of your gift to the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. No matter the amount, your donation joins the donations of nearly 55,000 others to create a powerful force to create lasting, local change.”

How to Give to the Pitt United Way Campaign

Giving to the United Way is easy: Paycheck deductions of $2 or more per month, starting with an employee’s January 2018 pay, are available through the My Pitt Portal; just click on the “Donate to the United Way” link in the upper-right corner of the page. Direct your gift to an individual fund of your choice, listed on the Pitt campaign website, or to the Impact Fund, which targets local agencies serving people with the most critical and immediate needs.
