President of Ghana to speak here Sept. 24

Jerry John Rawlings, president of the Republic of Ghana, will speak Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. at the Twentieth Century Club, 4201 Bigelow Blvd., as part of Pitt's International Week.

The event is free, but audience members must pick up invitations in advance at the William Pitt Union ticket office. Invitations must be presented at the Twentieth Century Club for admittance to Rawlings' address.

As head of state since the mid-1980s, Rawlings has helped to reverse Ghana's economic slide, enabling the west African nation to register an average growth in gross domestic product of 5 percent annually. Multi-party democracy was restored to Ghana five years ago. Rawlings was sworn in as the first president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana in January 1993. He was re-elected to a second four-year term following the December 1996 elections.
