Ghana's president visits

Ghana's President Jerry John Rawlings made a pitch for more foreign investment in his country, fair gold prices (Ghana — formerly the Gold Coast — produced 2.1 million ounces last year, but plummeting prices cut into profits) and passage of proposed U.S. legislation that would provide $650 million for trade opportunities in Africa, during a day-long visit to Pittsburgh, Sept. 24. Prior to addressing some 700 Pitt students and personnel, community members and flag-waving native Ghanaians at Oakland's 20th Century Club, Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman, were given a scroll depicting the Cathedral of Learning by Chancellor Mark Nordenberg. The president and first lady also toured the Cathedral's African Heritage Nationality Room. Their appearance was sponsored by H.J. Heinz Corp., whose Star-Kist division's tuna cannery employs 1,500 people in Tena, Ghana.
