Sports Medicine Center recognized

UPMC Health System's Center for Sports Medicine is one of seven U.S. sports medicine centers cited by SELF magazine as being "on the cutting edge of research and treatment." SELF lists the leading centers in its October issue.

The center is the Pittsburgh region's largest and most comprehensive sports medicine program. Christopher Harner, professor of orthopaedic surgery and chief of sports medicine at UPMC, is medical director.

SELF researchers focused on treatments and services available to women. The magazine calls UPMC's center "a mecca for injured runners and dancers." It conducts a weekly runners injury clinic, directed by Dave Jenkinson, a primary care sports medicine physician and assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery. The center provides care for dancers in the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT). Freddie H. Fu, professor and chair of orthopaedic surgery, is the company physician for PBT; Kathleen Nachazel, the center's athletic training team leader, serves as PBT's athletic trainer.
