Pitt sponsors lunchtime series

Two Pitt groups with an international emphasis are sponsoring lunchtime presentations at the Downtown Barnes & Noble bookstore. The monthly series will run through June. The University Center for International Studies and the Department of Africana Studies are providing a variety of entertaining and informational presentations for lunchtime Downtown book-browsers. Events have included Kuntu Repertory Theatre members performing scenes and songs from their production of "Ancestors Walking,"a calligraphy expert from Asian studies demonstrating the craft, and folk music from Russia and East Europe performed by the Pittsburgh International Folk Theater.

Future events include: December – Kuntu Repertory Theatre (Dec. 9, 12:30-1:30 p.m.); January – Africana studies; February – Latin American studies; March – Russian and East European studies; April – Asian studies; May – Latin American studies; June – African Drum & Dance Ensemble. Dates for the 1999 presentations have not been set.

"We are trying to provide interesting and informative events to our bookstore's customers during lunch hour,"said Carole Katila of Barnes & Noble. "We put out a display of theme-related books for browsers.""These areas in particular were chosen in part because we wanted to present an international culture theme to the series,"said Pitt Public Affairs spokesperson Ron Cichowicz. "We're doing this to introduce the Downtown crowd to the University and some of its international programs and to let them experience international arts and culture,"he said.

The Downtown Barnes & Noble is located at 339 Sixth Avenue. For more information, contact Katila at 642-4324.
