Staff Association Council wants discussion of staff reclassification plan

The Staff Association Council (SAC) leadership is trying to open up discussions of a Human Resources staff reclassification plan.

SAC president Rich Colwell told Senate Council on March 22 and again this month that SAC officers have concerns with the salary administration section of the reclassification plan. SAC does not approve of everything that is being considered, Colwell said.

But he declined further comment because details of the plan are still confidential, pending review by University administrators. Colwell reiterated this position at the April 12 Senate Council meeting.

Human Resources officials said the reclassification plan is expected to go into effect July 1. The plan is designed to streamline the number of staff job classifications, identify career paths and improve staff retention. (See University Times, March 4, 1999.)

On May 26, SAC is sponsoring a staff spring assembly with speaker Ron Frisch, associate vice chancellor for Human Resources.

Frisch tentatively is scheduled to address issues related to the reclassification plan. The assembly will be held from noon to 2 p.m., in the William Pitt Union Ballroom.

In other Staff Association Council news:

* A spring assembly also is set for April 28, noon – 2 p.m., Scaife Hall Lecture Room 1 (4th floor), featuring Steve Pederson, director of athletics. Pederson is expected to field questions related to the future of Pitt athletics.

* The city-sponsored Adopt a Block project, dormant during the winter months, returns April 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. SAC co-sponsors the project. Staff can volunteer to help SAC members pick up trash on South Bouquet Street from Forbes Avenue south to Dawson Street. Tools and trash bags will be provided and light refreshments will be offered.

The project is scheduled monthly; the next three dates are May 18, June 15 and July 20. For more information, call the SAC office, 624-4236.

* The Staff Handbook is still in the approval stage, Colwell said. After approval, the handbook will be accessible on-line from the University's homepage and hard copies in binder form will be available in each responsibility center.

* Elections for SAC membership and officers are being planned. The timing of the elections will be outlined at the next regular SAC meeting, scheduled for April 21, 12:30 to 2 p.m., 2P56 Forbes Quad. Meetings are open to the Pitt community.

* The next edition of SAC Tracks, the council's newsletter, is due out in May.

* The annual Pitt Ken-nywood Day is July 24. Details on the event will be forthcoming, Colwell said.
