Pitt's School of Nursing initiates recognition program

Pitt's School of Nursing is sponsoring a first Cameos of Caring awards gala on Oct. 28 as a way of honoring local nurses for excellence in nursing care.

One nurse from each of 22 southwestern Pennsylvania hospitals will be honored for acting as a role model for the nursing profession. Honorees will be chosen by the hospitals.

Nurses selected will be given a work of art by local artist Judith Charlson and will be featured in a video depicting cameos of them on the job.

According to Ellen Rudy, dean of the nursing school, Cameos of Caring was inspired by an Ann Landers column decrying the lack of recognition for nurses. "Nurses, particularly those toiling at the bedside, are working longer hours with patients who are older, sicker, and who need more skilled nursing care," Rudy said. "We want to put the spotlight on these unsung heroes of health care."
