Computer engineering program created

The latest edition of "Engineering Quarterly" predicts that computer engineering will become the "second largest of the engineering disciplines" by the year 2005.

To meet this need, Pitt's electrical engineering and computer science departments have implemented an interdisciplinary computer engineering program.

"The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an annual employment growth of over 6 percent per year for the next decade, or some 168,000 new jobs in this technical area," said Ron Hoelzeman, professor of electrical engineering. The program will provide broad-based training in designing, producing, operating and maintaining computers and digital systems.

"I consider this program to be an exemplary model for interdisciplinary and inter-school cooperation," said Siegfried Treu, computer science chair. "It illustrates how faculty with different, but related or complementary areas of expertise can negotiate constructively toward creating a new degree program."
