Pitt United Way drive continues to Dec. 31

Pitt's 1996 United Way campaign has collected approximately $280,000 to date. The amount is about equal to last year's total at the same point in the campaign.

This year's goal for the United Way campaign is $435,000, an increase of about 5 percent over 1995's final total.

Campaign coordinator Dolores Vojta, a staff member in the Office of Institutional Advancement, noted that the deadline for contributing to the campaign is Dec. 31.

According to Vojta, some people are under the impression that Pitt's campaign has ended because the deadline for returning pledge cards and qualifying for a prize was Nov. 1.

"We're going to be taking contributions through the end of the year," said campaign chair John DeVitto, associate vice chancellor for Business. "If everybody would get their contributions in as soon as they can, we would appreciate it." Along with increasing contributions by 5 percent, the steering committee also would like to boost participation in this year's campaign.

Last year, just under 50 percent of the University took part in the fund drive. The committee would like to see that figure top the 50 percent mark this year.

In related news, the United Way has named Daniel Edelstone, a Pitt faculty member in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, the winner of the "Dr. Bones McCoy Award." Named after the doctor on "Star Trek," the award was given to Edelstone in recognition of his "enterprising" work on behalf of the 1996 United Way Allegheny County campaign. Specifically, Edelstone enrolled department chairs in the School of Medicine in the campaign as leadership givers, individuals who donate $1,000 or more.
