Scanlon named interim head of Pitt's Greensburg campus

Norman W. Scanlon, vice president for academic affairs at Pitt's Greensburg campus (UPG), has been appointed interim president of UPG.

Scanlon replaces George Chambers, who retired Dec. 31 after serving as president of UPG for 16 years.

In his letter of appointment, Provost James Maher said that the confidence Scanlon's colleagues place in his judgment makes him the ideal person to lead the campus while the search for a permanent president is underway.

As interim president, Scanlon said he plans to continue the momentum for physical plant, enrollment and academic growth started by former President Chambers.

"That means working closely with the UPG Advisory Board on fundraising and other types of community-related activities," Scanlon said. "It also means articulating the needs of the Greensburg campus within the mission and fiscal constraints of the whole University system, moving along with anticipated capital projects like additional student housing, and continuing to work with faculty and staff to enhance academic and student life programming." A member of UPG's political science faculty, Scanlon became a full-time administrator in 1986, when he was named associate dean of academic affairs. He was appointed interim dean in 1991, dean in 1993 and vice president for academic affairs in 1995.
