UPMC, Passavant expected to merge

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township have signed a letter of intent to merge.

Under the agreement, which is expected to be completed this summer, Passavant Hospital will remain an independent entity within the UPMC system. The partnership is designed to expand health-related services, facilities and programs in northern Allegheny and southern Butler counties by giving Passavant access to a broad scope of tertiary-level UPMC services and research.

Under the proposed agreement, Passavant Hospital would become a subsidiary of UPMC. It would retain its own board of trustees and medical staff.

Established in 1849, Passa-vant was the first Protestant hospital in the United States.
