Several Pitt schools, programs included in U.S. News rankings

Pitt's master of physical therapy program has been ranked 11th in the nation, the highest of any University program, in the annual U.S. News & World Report ranking of the best graduate schools and programs in the nation.

The magazine's report is based on a survey of deans, administrators and senior faculty around the nation and was recently released as a special publication, "America's Best Graduate Schools 1997." Pitt's School of Medicine was the University's highest ranked school in the survey. It placed 17th in the nation among research medical schools, just behind the University of Chicago and ahead of Case Western Reserve University.

Harvard University's School of Medicine was ranked No. 1 by the survey. The only school of medicine in Pennsylvania to rank ahead of Pitt was at the University of Pennsylvania.

Pitt's master of physical therapy program was tied for 11th place with the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Tied behind it were Temple University and the University of Delaware. Tied ahead of it were Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, Northwestern University, Texas Woman's University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Several other Pitt graduate schools and programs also made U.S. News & World Report's list of the best graduate offerings in the nation. Katz Graduate School of Business was ranked 42nd in the nation, between the graduate business schools at the College of William and Mary, and Arizona State University. Stanford's graduate business school was ranked No. 1. In Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business came in the highest at No. 3, while Carnegie Mellon University was ranked No. 14 and Penn State, No. 30.

Among law schools, Pitt's School of Law ranked in the second tier, among such schools as Loyola, Rutgers, Baylor, American University, Villanova, Temple and Indiana. The No. 1 law school in the survey was Yale University. The University of Pennsylvania was ranked 11th. Only the 50 schools in the first tier were given individual rankings.

Pitt's School of Education came in 43rd in the survey. It was tied with SUNY-Buffalo. Tied ahead of Pitt were the University of California-Santa Barbara and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Columbia University Teachers College was ranked No. 1 in the survey, while the University of Pennsylvania came in at No. 18. No other Pennsylvania schools were ranked.

Pitt's master of social work program was tied for 18th place with the University of Pennsylvania and Virginia Commonwealth University in the U.S. News & World Report survey. Tied ahead of Pitt were Boston College, Boston University, Smith College and UCLA. Tied behind Pitt were Bryn Mawr, SUNY-Albany, the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, University of Kansas, University of Maryland-Baltimore and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Cited as the No. 1 master of social work program was the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
