Taking responsibility for affirmative action

To the editor:

Members of the Provost's Advisory Committee on Women's Concerns (PACWC) were pleased to see the serious consideration for affirmative action reflected in the provost's decision to delay the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown search for a new academic vice president (University Times, April 17, 1997). We expect that all search committees at all phases of their work will think affirmatively about recruitment of women and minorities: in the search's advertising, personal contacts, nomination of insiders and outsiders, and selection of candidates for campus visits.

All members of the University community must share the responsibility for recruiting women and minorities in all searches. We applaud the Provost's Office for reminding all of us of that responsibility.
