The Greenwall Foundation, one of the leading foundation funders of bioethics education in the United States, has created a visiting professorship in honor of the late Oscar M. Ruebhausen, a former chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees.

Pitt’s Center for Bioethics and Health Law is the first recipient of the award, which will be used to support a three-day visit to the University in November by Michael J. Sandel, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University. Sandel will deliver a lecture, conduct colloquia and speak in a number of courses. Sandel is best known for his theory of communitarianism and his critique of Rawls’s “A Theory of Justice.” He was a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics where he was a supporter of embryonic stem cell research and a critic of “genetic enhancement.”

The visiting professorship is named for Ruebhausen, a partner of the New York law firm Debevoise & Plimpton for almost 50 years.
