Diabetes epidemic: Are you at risk?

Early detection of diabetes can reduce the chances of developing complications. The American Diabetes Association recommends you see your doctor right away if you have one or more of these symptoms:

• Frequent urination

• Excessive thirst

• Extreme hunger

• Unusual weight loss

• Increased fatigue

• Irritability

• Blurry vision

To keep your risk for diabetes low:

• Keep your weight under control, or lose weight if you are overweight.

• Stay active most days of the week.

• Eat low-fat meals high in fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods.
