Osher funds CGS scholarships

Pitt’s College of General Studies (CGS) will award $5,000 tuition scholarships next year to 10 students ages 25-50 who are re-entering collegiate studies. The scholarships will be funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation.

The foundation selected CGS as one of 11 U.S. institutions to receive a one-year $50,000 grant for re-entry scholarships. The foundation stipulated that the awards go to students:

• Whose collegiate studies have been interrupted for approximately five years by circumstances beyond their control;

• Who are resuming their studies to complete their first baccalaureate degree;

• Who can look forward to a significant number of years in the workforce following graduation.

The grant may be renewed annually for up to three years with the prospect that CGS could receive an endowment gift of $1 million.

In 2004, the foundation awarded CGS $100,000 to establish the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a liberal arts program for adults aged 55 and older.

“The Osher Re-Entry Scholarship Fund will allow us to further our commitment to the region’s adult learners by reducing financial barriers for students in need,” said N. John Cooper, dean of CGS and the School of Arts and Sciences.

Kelly Otter, CGS assistant dean for academic programs, said, “The mission of the Osher Foundation is to provide funds for a population of students, usually working full time and supporting families, who often cannot justify the expense of returning to school.”
