Pitt garners Science Center awards

Pitt will be well represented at the 11th annual Carnegie Science Center awards presentation, set for May 2.

Last week, the Science Center announced this year’s winners of its Awards for Excellence, which recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in western Pennsylvania.

Pitt affiliates who will receive awards are:

• Harvey S. Borovetz, professor and chair of the Department of Bioengineering, will receive the Life Sciences Award, which recognizes and honors scientific advances in new and innovative biomedical and life sciences enterprises.

Borovetz, who also is the Robert L. Hardesty Professor in the Department of Surgery and a professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, will be recognized for his work in developing mechanical circulatory support technology.

• Kay Brummond, professor of chemistry, will receive the Emerging Female Scientist Award, which “recognizes a female leader whose cutting-edge work is inspiring change in math, science or technology.”

Brummond will be honored for her work in synthesizing organic compounds for use in drugs, among other accomplishments.

• Cara J. Hayden, associate editor of Pitt Magazine, will receive the Journalism Award. The award recognizes excellence in a body of journalistic work over a course of a year or longer that present science and technology news and issues via any medium.

• Sanjeev Shroff, professor and Gerald McGinnis Chair in Bioengineering, will receive an educator award, which recognizes innovation in science and technology as demonstrated by inspiring students to understand, appreciate and apply science.

Shroff also is professor of medicine, senior investigator at Magee-Womens Research Institute and a member of the core faculty of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

• The Mascaro Sustainability Initiative, part of the School of Engineering, will receive the Environmental Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the fields of environmental protection and restoration that benefit the economy, health and quality of life in the region.

The initiative strives to nurture research and education in the areas of green construction and sustainable water use.
