LETTERS

To the editor:

The Cathedral of Learning stinks.

If you approach the building from Fifth or Bigelow, the first thing you smell is grease, grease with a hint of hamburger or fried chicken. (Some days you smell cinnamon, but that is a perfume used to mask the smell of grease.) If you work on floors 5-10, as my colleagues and I do, your office smells of grease. It starts at 10:30 a.m. and ends about 3:30 p.m. I’ve complained about this for years, and I have come to believe the engineers when they say that there is no mechanical solution.

But there is a simple solution: Stop frying and grilling in the basement of this historic landmark. Serve sandwiches, soup and sushi. Between Craig and Forbes, there are plenty of places to buy burgers and fries.

If we are going to spend $4.8 million to clean up this grand and beautiful building, let’s also take care to get rid of the grease.
