Two Pitt undergrads earn Goldwater scholarships

Two Pitt students are among the new 2007-2008 Goldwater Scholars named nationwide.

Stanley F. Steers, a physics and music major, and Benjamin O. Gordon, a mechanical engineering major, are among the 317 awardees named by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. They bring to 36 the total number of Goldwater scholarships won by Pitt students.

This year’s Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Steers’ stated career goal is to obtain a doctoral degree in physics and to conduct academic research in the field of non-linear dynamics and turbulence. Gordon, who aspires to a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, aims to teach at a university and conduct research in smart structures applications aimed at improving performance and energy efficiency of various engineered constructs.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986. The scholarship program honoring the late Sen. Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding undergraduates to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

In its 19-year history, the foundation has awarded 5,202 scholarships worth approximately $51 million. The trustees plan to award about 300 scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.
