Katz, CBA share $1 million donation

Pitt has received a $1 million gift from alumnus James B. Tafel, owner of Street Sense, the horse that won this month’s Kentucky Derby. The James B. Tafel Expendable Gift and the James B. Tafel Endowed Student Support Fund will support students in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and the College of Business Administration.

A 1950 Pitt business graduate, Tafel is the retired chair and chief executive officer for Dun & Bradstreet Technical Publishing Company. He has given several other gifts to Pitt’s business schools. The James Tafel Endowed Internship Fund supports undergraduate business students participating in professional internships; the James B. Tafel Endowment Fund supports Pitt business faculty and staff, and the James B. Tafel Fellowship is a need-based award the supports MBA students in their final year.

Tafel received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Katz in 1987 and is an emeritus member of the Katz/CBA board of visitors.

Tafel began as a sales representative for Ketchum McLeod and Grove, later becoming its chair and chief executive officer. While there, he negotiated a merger with Dun & Bradstreet to form one of the largest publishing companies in the United States.
