Produce subscription program planned

Community Relations is introducing a program, dubbed “Farms to Pitt,” that will enable subscribers to obtain fresh local produce.

Part of Pitt’s Partnership for Food, the new program offers fresh products delivered weekly directly from an area farm to designated locations on the Pittsburgh campus. Subscribers pay a fee in advance, which goes to a particular farm from which they then receive fruits and vegetables over a 20-week period. The cost can be as low as $18 a week. Deliveries begin in June and run to October.

Interested parties should email Community Relations at stz@pitt.edu by May 20. “Emailing us involves no commitment,” stated Steve Zupcic, assistant director of Community Relations. “Once we have a list of interested participants, we will contact them with further details.”

Farm subscriptions benefit both the farmer and consumer, Zupcic said. “The farmer benefits by having weekly customers, while consumers can enjoy the convenience and variety of safe and nutritious produce throughout the growing season.”
