Oakland walking program to begin

The Oakland community is invited to join in the “Ready, Set, Walk!” challenge, established by the Oakland Transportation Management Association (OTMA) in partnership with America on the Move’s (AOM) “Get Moving Pittsburgh.”

The Oakland “Ready, Set, Walk!” challenge, which begins tomorrow, June 1, is a program developed to promote the healthy benefits of walking and to illustrate how adding additional steps to a person’s daily routine can improve their overall health. This challenge also is meant to encourage people to walk more on a daily basis, and to consider walking as a viable commuting alternative.

Local employees, students, residents and visitors can take part in the walk challenge by registering on the OTMA web site at www.otma-pgh.org.

After completing registration, participants will meet for the June 1 kick-off event at Schenley Plaza. Registered walkers will pick up their walking resource kits, which will help them to track their progress.

Participants will count their steps from June 1 through June 29, and all registered walkers will be entered in four weekly random drawings for a chance to win an iPod Shuffle.

Registered participants also will walk to win the grand prize, an overnight stay at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. On June 29, the program will host a grand finale in Schenley Plaza.
