Obituary: Joseph E. Phillips

Joseph Edward Phillips, assistant vice chancellor for Business in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, died July 18, 2007. He was 44.

A 1985 Pitt graduate with a dual major in business and economics, Phillips began his Pitt career in 1987 as an auditor. In 1991, he earned an MBA.

In 1992, Phillips moved to the Department of Athletics, where he held a number of positions, including as associate athletics director for Business, Finance and Personnel and as associate athletics director for Administration.

In 1998, he was named director of Auxiliaries, Budget and Finance in the Office of Budget and Controller. In 2000, he was promoted to assistant vice chancellor for Business, where he oversaw business and financial matters for Auxiliaries and the University Police Department. He also directed Parking, Transportation and Services and Panther Central, Pitt’s ID center.

Former colleagues in the Controller’s office prepared a composite tribute to Phillips: “Joe was a trusted colleague and valued friend. In his 20 years of working at the University he was admired for his integrity and principles. He was hardworking, trustworthy and integral to the University’s success over the past decades.

“Joe was well-known and well-liked. Although many people would probably describe Joe as a quiet and reserved individual, he was a talented comic writer and entertaining impersonator who kept his friends laughing. He will be sorely missed and long remembered for bringing a smile to our faces.”

Phillips is survived by his wife, Michelle R. Phillips; his daughters Grace Alexis and Olivia Rose Phillips; his mother, Mary Phillips; a sister, Kathleen Seapker; a brother, Thomas Phillips; father- and mother-in-law Ralph and Mary Caratelli, and eight nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial donations go to Grace and Olivia’s College Trust Fund, First National Bank, 2000 Corporate Dr., Suite 250, Wexford, PA 15090.
