Pitt has designated its Black History Month program as the K. Leroy Irvis Black History Month program to honor the memory of the state legislative leader, Pitt alumnus and emeritus trustee. Irvis, who in 1977 became the first African-American speaker of the Pennsylvania House, sponsored the 1966 legislation that made Pitt a state-related institution.

The inaugural event in the program was the Feb. 1 invitation-only premiere of the WQED-produced TV documentary, “Fly Boys: Western Pennsylvania’s Tuskegee Airmen.” The film includes several Tuskegee airmen who are Pitt alumni.

Pitt was a sponsor of the film along with WQED Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Foundation and the Alcoa Foundation.
