2 scholarships set up at Pitt-Bradford

Pitt’s Bradford campus recently announced the establishment of two scholarships.

William and Mary Slivinski have given $25,000 to the Bradford campus to create a scholarship in memory of William’s brother, who died in 2003.

The Dr. Thomas A. Slivinski Memorial Scholarship Fund will benefit students who major or minor in a technology-related field. The pledge has been matched by the Zippo/Case Technology Challenge, bringing the total gift to $50,000.

William Slivinski is a member of UPB’s advisory board.

Also at UPB, the family and friends of James and Marie Weaver have donated $10,000 to create a scholarship in their names for academically eligible sophomores, juniors or seniors with demonstrated financial need.

James Weaver, who died last year, was a lifelong resident of Bradford. He earned degrees in economics and industrial relations at St. Bonaventure University and St. Francis College of Pennsylvania, respectively.

He was deputy secretary of Labor and Industry under Govs. Milton Shapp and Robert Casey.

At the time of his death, he was the last original member of the Pitt-Bradford advisory board who had continued to serve on that body.

Marie Weaver also is a lifelong Bradford resident. She worked for more than 30 years in accounting and continues service of more than 40 years as a Pennsylvania Registrar of Vital Statistics.
